This past weekend Doug Ford made it clear to the people that he is representing that he does not respect their right to disagree with his policies. While responding to questions about the ongoing protests against the lockdown, in his daily media report, he announced
"“When I see our Canadian flag flown upside down, that is the utmost disrespect to the men and women that are overseas fighting for our freedoms.... If they wanna fly our flag upside down, they don’t respect our country, I’ll be the first to help them pack their bags and find a country that they want, but don’t be flying our flag upside down,”
Displaying a flag upside down is "a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property" It has been used by extension to make a statement about distress in civic, political, or other areas. With millions of Ontarians now out work, losing businesses and even homes, I would qualify this moment in history an absolute time of civil distress to our province and nation. Who is he to say to his constiuents, Those people he is supposed to be representing, that they should leave their own country because they feel his policies are causing dire distress? I say to Doug Ford, our veterans fought for the right to stand up to government, and it's the utmost disrespect to stand on their graves and dog whistle for blind partisan support for policies that go against the very thing they died for. Those Ontarians you mocked and scorned will be the ones you seek votes and donations from in 2022 when you're up for re-election. And those Ontarians may help you pack your bags.
